William Allen White UPDATE!!

Ten seats full!

by Kathy Randolph

November 15, 2007

We now have 10 students who have secured their "seat on the bus" to attend the ceremony for the William Allen White awards.  Lara Brockway, Hunter Holcom, Evan Irish, Tristan Irish, Garrett Schuman, Jackson McKain, Justin Schumutz, Evan Morrical, Dylan Williams, and Vaughn Plumer have all read at least six of the nominated books.

William Allen White, native Kansan, was one of the greatest journalists of all time.  He became owner of the Emporia Gazette in 1895, and as he rose to literary and political prominence, he brought national fame to his home town.

The William Allen White Children's Book Award was established in 1952.  The award was established by the late Ruth Garver Gagliardo to honor the memory of one of the state's most distinguished citizens by encouraging young Kansans to read and enjoy good books.  A committee nominates several books in two age levels and children are then allowed to vote for their favorite. More information is available at the web site:  http://waw.emporia.edu

Ell-Saline Elementary students are encouraged to read the books nominated for the William Allen White award each year.  As an incentive, the school provides transportation to the awards ceremony at Emporia State University in the fall.  Award winners are available to autograph books and give an acceptance speech. A variety of other activities is provided for those who attend.

Students who read six books from the list of nominated books are invited to travel to Emporia for the awards ceremony.  If a student has read eleven books from the list, the entry fee is paid by the school.
